White Sugar Cookies

In a large bowl, sift together flour with baking powder, salt, baking soda, and nutmeg; set aside. In another bowl, cream shortening with sugar until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each. Stir in vanilla extract. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Chill dough at least 2 hours. Divide into fourths and work with one portion at a time, keeping the rest chilled. Roll dough on floured surface to a quarter inch thick. Cut into desired shapes. Place on baking sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, just until edges are blonde. Cool slightly before removing from baking sheet. Cool completely before icing.
Introduction
These are almost cake-like. Icing is not necassary, but is often desired. I will usually glaze them with confectionary sugar mixed with fresh citrus juices. These will puff up so don't cut them with intricate cutters; simple shapes work best.

- 1 cup milk
