Ingredients

Serves: 4-6 people (as side dish)

Metric Cups
  • 1 litre milk
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 200 grams semolina
  • 2 medium eggs (whisked)
  • 100 grams cheese (grated)
  • 100 grams butter
  • 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
  • 1 pinch of pepper
  • 1⅘ pints milk
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 7 ounces semolina
  • 2 medium eggs (whisked)
  • 3½ ounces cheese (grated)
  • 3½ ounces butter
  • 1 tablespoon breadcrumbs
  • 1 pinch of pepper

Method

Gnocchi Alla Romana (Semolinas Gnocchi) is a community recipe submitted by Sispaddy and has not been tested by Nigella.com so we are not able to answer questions regarding this recipe.

  • Simmer milk and salt for about 10 mins. Add slowly the semolina, whisking continually and cook for 10 mins.
  • Take off the heat and slowly add the eggs.
  • Spread on a clean and wet surface. The “doughâ€� will have to be about 1 – 1,5 cm high. (I personally use a large baking tin or tray)
  • When cooled completely, cut into disks of about 3cm (or any shape you like) and lay in a greased baking tin or pyrex dish.
  • Sprinkle all the cheese, a bit of pepper, the bread crumbs and distribute the butter cut into very small pieces.
  • Cook in a pre-heated oven at 220°C for about 15-20 mins.

    This is normally eaten as a side dish... but I love it so much I can have loads just on his own! To make it a little lighter you can use half the amount of cheese and butter, still with a yummy result!
