Can I Use Another Ingredient To Top Up The Guinness In The Chocolate Guinness Cake As My Can Is Slightly Too Small?

Asked by Dragonfly25. Answered on 5th December 2023

Full question

Hi! My family love the Chocolate Guinness Cake, so I have to make 2 for Christmas. As each can is only 440 mls and I need 500 mls, can I use some milk, or other liquid, instead of opening 2 cans and throwing the rest away as I normally do? Thank you.

Our answer

Nigella's Chocolate Guinness Cake (from FEAST is a damp and sticky cake that is popular for many occasions. If you have leftover Guinness then you could freeze it and use it another time for cooking (it won't be good for drinking), such as for a half quantity of the Irish Oaten Rolls or to top up the amount of Guinness needed for the No-Knead Black Bread.

If that is not an option then as the recipe contains sour cream, we would suggest using an extra 60ml of sour cream instead of 60ml of Guinness. As the amount per cake is quite small (2 tablespoons per cake) it should not particularly affect the finished cake, though as we have not tried it this way ourselves, we are unable to guarantee the results.
