Asked by memom. Answered on 31st January 2025

Full question

I am not sure if Greek and Greek-style yoghurts are the same in the UK? Can they be used interchangeably in Nigella's recipes?

Our answer

Some of Nigella's recipes, such as Turkish Eggs (from SIMPLY NIGELLA) and Beef And Aubergine Fatteh (from AT MY TABLE](/books/at-my-table)) use "Greek Yogurt", by which we mean yogurt that has been strained so that it is thicker than regular yogurt and without any added ingredients.

In the UK you can buy both Greek yogurt and Greek-style yogurt. Greek yogurt is produced in Greece using Greek milk and Greek-style yogurt is made outside of Greece but using similar methods to Greek yogurt . Greek yogurt itself does not have Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), a legal status that means that only yogurt produced in Greece can be labelled as "Greek Yogurt". The EU has stated that Greek yogurt should be produced in Greece, otherwise it should be labelled as Greek-style yogurt and the UK appears to be following this voluntarily, though it may not be the same in other countries. For Nigella's recipes both Greek and Greek-style yogurt are fine and we prefer to use the full-fat (whole milk) version unless the recipe states otherwise.
