Spanish Chicken With Alternatives to Chorizo

Full question
The Spanish Chicken With Chorizo sounds great and easy to make; do you think I can use bacon instead of chorizo? Chorizo is not easy to get in Bombay!
Our answer
Nigella's Spanish Chicken With Chorizo And Potatoes (from Kitchen and on the Nigella website) is a "traybake" recipe where all of the ingredients are cooked together on baking sheets in the oven. The fat from the sausages and chicken help to cook and flavour the potatoes. If you can't find chorizo easily then it would be possible to substitute other small sausages (or fatter ones cut into chunks) or even bacon. But you will need to watch the bacon carefully as it will cook more quickly than sausages and you may need to remove the cooked bacon rashers/slices before the end of the cooking time.
The disadvantage of using a substitute for chorizo is that you will not get the distinct paprika flavour of the chorizo permeating the potatoes. However if you can find Spanish smoked paprika then you could add this to the oil at the beginning of the recipe. Spanish smoked paprika is available in "sweet" and "hot" versions and the sweet version is usually used in chorizo. However you can use the hot version if you prefer a spicier dish. We would suggest using 1-2 teaspoons of the paprika, depending on the type, your own taste and preference.
