Website Recipes - Beetroot Chutney/Tin Toms

Asked by sirsnow. Answered on 3rd September 2011

Full question

In the Beetroot Chutney recipe on the website, what does 2C sugar and 2C wine vinegar equate to in g/ml?

What are "tin toms"? I have googled it and tried to search also on your website and can't get an answer anywhere. Lisakiss.

Our answer

Unfortunately both of these queries relate to recipes on the website that have been posted by users of the website and not by the Nigella team (there are 2 sections, one for Nigella's recipes and one where users can post recipes) so they are not tested by us.

For the beetroot chutney recipe we would guess that the "2 C" stands for "2 cups" which would equate to 500mls of vinegar and 400g of sugar. We would also recomment looking at Nigella's own Beetroot and Ginger Chutney from Christmas (p237).

We suspect "tin toms" means tinned or canned tomatoes. These are usually peeled plum tomatoes in tomato juice and normally a standard tin/can is 400g/14 ounces. We tend to prefer using chopped or diced tomatoes rather than the whole or crushed tomatoes.
