Full question
Tahini can taste oh so different depending on the brand. What brand is used in the Chocolate Tahini Banana Bread recipe? Nigella mentioned a nearby shop or to buy online, but didn’t give a link. Is it possible to share this with us? Thank you.
Our answer
Nigella's Chocolate Tahini Banana Bread has the chocolate flavour enhanced by the smokiness of tahini paste. Nigella mentions that she likes to use Middle Eastern brands for the banana bread as they tend to be more fluid and have a nuttier flavour. However, you can use supermarket brand tahini if that is what is most readily available. Just make sure to give the tahini a good stir to loosen it before using it in the recipe.
We don't like to mention specific brands as they can go out of stock and availability can be quite regional. However, as Nigella mentioned, if you have a local Asian or Middle Eastern store then you are likely to find this type of tahini. Most tahinis have a layer of oil on the top and when you tip the jar the more solid part underneath should also tip as well and not be completely solid. Some larger supermarkets have specialty food aisles and you may find some brands there. Often on the packaging it will tell you where the tahini was made so you can see if it is made in the Middle East or in Europe. There are numerous Middle Eastern, Iranian, Lebanese and Persian on-line retailers and most seem to sell less mainstream brands.
