Oma's Alsatian Butter Cookies

Allow butter to come to room temperature. Preheat oven to 375. Lightly grease cookie sheets. Cream the butter and sugar, then add egg and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt. Add to creamed mixture. Drop teaspoonfulls of batter onto baking pans. Butter the flat bottom of a drinking glass and dip into a bowl of granulated sugar (may use decorative colored sugars here) and then press down on top of each ball of dough flattening to about 1/4 inch thickness. Dip glass in sugar for each cookie so that each has a coating of sugar on top. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes - edges should just be golden brown when done.

My Oma was from Alsace Lorraine and these were the cookies she made every holiday season - they became a family tradition.

- 2⅓ cups flour
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ pound butter (real butter - lightly salted if you can find it, if not then 1 stick of salted and 1 stick of unsalted butter)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla

Additional Information
Using lightly salted butter is very important as is softening it without microwaving - just leave the butter out on the counter to soften.
